Easy Green Bean Casserole Recipe
Our Amazing Green Bean Casserole is like no other! It's a fancier version of the usual green bean casserole but still super easy to make. We use bacon, milk, parmesan cheese, onions, and a special ingredient: onion rings. You can prepare and put it together beforehand, then bake it the next day and add crispy onion rings at the end.
Ingredients:
- 4 cans (14.5 ounces each) of Whole Green Beans
- 2 cups of milk (2% or whole)
- 8 strips of thick bacon, diced
- 1 medium-sized yellow onion, finely chopped
- 2 heaping tablespoons of all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon of optional Shiitake Mushroom Powder (link provided above)
- 1 cup of shredded parmesan cheese
- Black pepper, to taste
- 1 bag (14 ounces) of frozen onion rings
Instructions:
Drain the green beans thoroughly in a colander to remove excess water. Set them aside.Dice the bacon into small pieces and cook in a skillet until crispy and golden brown. Remove the bacon from the skillet using a slotted spoon and place it on paper towels to drain. Keep aside. Pour off some of the bacon fat, leaving about 3 tablespoons in the skillet.
Add the diced onions to the skillet and sauté until they turn golden brown and soft.
Sprinkle the flour over the onions and cook for a minute or two. Slowly pour in the milk while whisking continuously over medium heat until the mixture starts to simmer. Season with black pepper and optional Shiitake Mushroom Powder, if using. Continue whisking until slightly thickened, about the consistency of gravy. If the mixture becomes too thick, add a little milk and whisk to adjust the thickness. Once thickened, add the shredded cheese and stir until melted. Remove from heat.
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Use a 9x13 inch casserole dish. Spread the green beans evenly in the dish. Pour the prepared sauce over the beans, then sprinkle the crumbled bacon on top.
Bake in the center of the oven for 30 minutes.
While the casserole bakes, cook the onion rings on a sheet pan in the oven or in an air fryer until crispy and golden brown. Once done, chop them into bite-sized pieces.
After 30 minutes of baking, sprinkle the entire casserole with the chopped onion rings and bake for an additional 10 to 15 minutes until bubbly.
Let the casserole rest for at least 10 minutes before serving.
If preparing ahead of time, make the sauce and cook the bacon the day before. Assemble the casserole when ready to bake and add the onion rings before baking.
